Στόχος του μαθήματος είναι να εισάγει τους φοιτητές-τριες στις έννοιες «αντιπαράθεση-συνύπαρξη» μέσα από την κριτική ανάγνωση των υφιστάμενων αστικών τοπίων, των διαδικασιών που τα παρήγαγαν, το ρόλο της πολιτικής και πιο συγκεκριμένα των αστικών πολιτικών στις σύγχρονες πόλεις. Όλα τα παραπάνω, με έμφαση στα συστατικά στοιχεία του αστικού σχεδιασμού και της θεωρίας του αστικού σχεδιασμού. Η εξοικείωση των φοιτητών με τα πολλαπλά επίπεδα και τις πολλαπλές κλίμακες σχεδιασμού είναι επίσης ένας βασικός στόχος του μαθήματος, σε συνδυασμό με την κατανόηση της έννοιας των στρατηγικών παρεμβάσεων σε επίπεδο πόλης. Από την κλίμακα της πόλης, της γειτονιάς και του οικοδομικού τετραγώνου μέχρι και του δημόσιου χώρου, τα πολλαπλά επίπεδα του σχεδιασμού θα είναι βασικό αντικείμενο της συνθετικής διαδικασίας.

Τα σύγχρονα αστικά τοπία μετασχηματίζονται μέσα σε ένα πλαίσιο διαρκών και εναλλασσόμενων κρίσεων (οικονομική κρίση, πανδημία, κλιματική αλλαγή κ.α.). Υπό αυτές τις συνθήκες, οι ευάλωτες και εύθραυστες περιοχές των πόλεων είναι ακόμη πιο εκτεθειμένες, με τους κατοίκους συχνά να βρίσκονται πολλές φορές μακριά από τις διαδικασίες λήψης αποφάσεων για το σχεδιασμό του χώρου. Αυτό δεν σημαίνει όμως στασιμότητα, καθώς περιοχές δυσπρόσιτες και υποβαθμισμένες μπορούν και συνυπάρχουν με τοπία νέων επενδύσεων, τουριστικής ανάπτυξης και ευημερίας. Το δίπολο αντιπαράθεση – συνύπαρξη αποτελούσε πάντα συστατικό στοιχείο της παραγωγής του χώρου.

Σε τέτοιες περιόδους αστικής μεγέθυνσης όπως η σημερινή, με την έντονη δράση της κτηματαγοράς, με αστικές παρεμβάσεις και από τη μεριά του δημοσίου, έρχονται στο προσκήνιο τα κενά σε διαδικασίες συμμετοχής, αλλά και η απόσταση μεταξύ των στόχων και επιδιώξεων επενδυτών και των αναγκών των τοπικών κοινωνιών που συχνά έρχονται σε σύγκρουση.

Το Εργαστήριο-Σύνθεση που θα εκπονήσουν οι φοιτητές-τριες θα τους βοηθήσει να αναπτύξουν δεξιότητες σε θέματα ανάλυσης των χαρακτηριστικών και των ταυτοτήτων που συγκροτούν και διαμορφώνουν τα σύγχρονα αστικά τοπία και να κατανοήσουν τη σημασία των πολλαπλών κλιμάκων στο σχεδιασμό του χώρου της πόλης. Ταυτόχρονα θα εξοικειωθούν περαιτέρω σε θέματα σύνθεσης σε επίπεδο αστικού σχεδιασμού και αστικών παρεμβάσεων.

Κέντρο της σύνθεσης θα είναι η περιοχή του Ελαιώνα-Βοτανικού στην Αθήνα, το τελευταίο ίσως brownfield της Αθήνας, μια περιοχή με έντονα στοιχεία υποβάθμισης που συνδυάζει χρήσεις εμπορίου αλλά και περιοχές κατοικίας, και βρίσκεται στο επίκεντρο του ενδιαφέροντος το τελευταίο διάστημα λόγω και του έργου της Διπλής Ανάπλασης που έχει προσελκύσει επενδυτική δραστηριότητα. Στόχος του μαθήματος θα είναι η εισαγωγή χρήσεων και λειτουργιών στην περιοχή που θα εξυπηρετήσουν τους κατοίκους στη γειτονιά του Μαρκόνι. Η διαδικασίες συμμετοχής που περιλαμβάνουν την τοπική κοινωνία αλλά και άλλους εμπλεκόμενους φορείς θα έχει κεντρικό ρόλο στο μάθημα, καθώς είναι προτεραιότητα οι φοιτητές να έρθουν σε επαφή με τέτοιες διαδικασίες.
