Lykourioti Iris / ProfessorShe was born in Athens in 1970. She graduated from the School of Architecture of the National Technical University of Athens in 1996 and completed her postgraduate studies (with honors, IKY 2001) in the Interdepartmental Postgraduate Program of the National Technical University of Athens, 'Architecture – Design of Space / Reseach in Architecture: Design-Space-Culture'.
She has been teaching Architectural Design at the Department of Architecture of the University of Thessaly since 2003 and has also taught at the School of Architecture of the National Technical University of Athens at undergraduate and postgraduate level (1999-2002). She has participated in teaching international workshops and in thesis evaluation committees (undergraduate and postgraduate) both in Greece and abroad.
She is a member of the Technical Chamber of Greece (TEE), Greek Architects Association (SADAS-PEA), and the Architectural Humanities Research Association (AHRA). She is working as a free-lance architect in Athens since 1997. She has worked on more than 150 architectural projects, both private and public.
Since 2005, he has co-founded the team A Whele’s architects, based in Athens and Brussels, which designs and constructs buildings and objects while conducting research on their use and modes of production. Spaces are studied as generators of everyday events through the dense connection of movement, visual perception, and the pluralistic use of space through the syntactic understanding of space (space syntax) and the composition of anti-form. Furthermore, taking into account the cultural mediations and environmental parameters of building production and the importance of construction techniques as basic knowledge for the social economy, culture, and ecosystems, the group supports the dispersion of free labor at the local level, designing and constructing buildings and original objects in collaboration with specialized craftspeople and small-scale workshops/factories. This position has formed the field of study of technogeographies. In addition, the group strongly supports women's work in architecture, both in terms of historiographical inclusion and employment. In 2014, the international magazine Blueprint included the team A Whale’s architects among the eight most innovative architecture firms in Greece.
Iris Lykourioti has co-edited two books on the contemporary reception of Le Corbusier's work in Greece (Two Journeys to Le Corbusier, Athens: Futura 2005 and Vers Contre LC: 16+10 positions on the relevance of Le Corbusier, Volos–Athens: Department of Architecture UTH & Futura 2011), a book on materiality in architectural design (Materiality in the Architectural Studio Process, Good Practices, Lisbon: Caleidoscopio, 2020) and the anthology Feminist Theories, Aesthetic Practices, Globalized Technologies (Volos: CNMFPP and University of Thessaly Press, 2021). Since 2023, she has been co-editing the online fanzine @farasi.zine. As part of her participation in the first Equality and Anti-Discrimination Committee of the University of Thessaly, she was part of the editorial team of the first Gender Equality Plan at the University of Thessaly. Since 2018, she has been co-founder and member of the Center for New Media and Feminist Public Practices (CNMFPP), a research unit of the Department of Architecture, University of Thessaly. She participated in the team of the Association of Architects (SADAS-PEA) that curated the Greek participation in the 15th Venice Architecture Biennale(#ThisIsACo-Op, 2016), which was awarded the Leona Violeta 2016 prize for the inclusion of women's work in architecture.

Her research interests cover three areas: 1) epistemological issues surrounding architectural composition and the material production of architectural forms, with the basic methodological principle of integrating design and making into theoretical research; 2) gender and the restoration and inclusion of women's words and works in the public sphere (historiography, technology, and public presence in architecture and art), 3) technical culture, the political economy of technical knowledge and architectural production with a theoretical basis in the epistemologies of the south, experimental theories of post-growth, techno/eco-feminism, and peer-to-peer production [publication on Technogeographies, research program Wool: Applications, Productive Sustainability, Holistic Design funded by the Research and Management Committee of UTH (ELKE), field work on Technogeographies of Wooden boatbuilding with Archipelago Network funded by the Hellenic Ministry of Culture etc]
