Inthiscourse, the students are required to deal with a designing project of increased complexity aiming at: a) managing a program which includes mainly collective activities, b) managing the relation between natural and artificial through a series of correlations (open/close, building/open space etc) and c) understanding the process of design as an evolution from the notion to the material construction.
The project is about a small center of environmental education and activities, on the outskirts of the city of Volos, on the bank of the river Xeria.
Within a series of 3 weekly exercises at the beginning of the semester, the students are encouraged to research the relations both of the ground/body and the city/countryside through constructions, images and videos presented to all the instructors and students. The design of the environmental center which follows, takes into consideration the synthetic object in relation to the issues raised during the initial exercises, but also introduces elements of function, anthropometry, materiality, and perception of space in the specific urban environment.
