The contemporary materiality of architecture focuses on the use of new materials and technologies that offer innovative solutions to the design and construction of buildings. An important factor is sustainability, as the materials are chosen with a view to energy efficiency and reducing the environmental footprint. Sophisticated materials, such as high-performance glass, recycled metals and bioclimatic elements, allow the building to better interact with the natural environment.
The modern materiality of architecture is not only about new materials and technologies, but also the reinterpretation of traditional construction techniques with classic materials such as wood, straw, soil, brick, metal and concrete. These materials are undergoing technological and ecological developments, which make them more sustainable and efficient. They are also used in new ways, incorporating modern principles of design and functionality, while maintaining their authenticity and cultural value. Thus, modern architecture promotes a synthesis of old and new, adapting traditional materials to the requirements of the time.
This course will pay particular attention to the use of environmentally friendly materials in architecture and the "decarbonisation" of built environment manufacturing processes.
