ARCHITECTURAL WORK/PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE

1980-today

Founder & head of the Architectural office Adamakis Architects and Associates based in Volos. Involved in architectural design; building construction; national and international architectural competitions. Specialisation: industrial heritage reuse.

Participates in national and international architectural competitions and has significant distinctions. Specialization: reuse of industrial heritage.

• In 1986 he was awarded by the Ministry of Environment, Physical Planning and Public Works for a project implemented in the field of housing and public building.

• Participates in architectural work exhibitions, conferences and his works have been published in prestigious architectural journals (Architectural issues - Space and arts - Building - Structures, etc.).

• Participates as a member in many groups for the study of important public buildings.

• Participated in the study team of the first University building of the University of Thessaly, in the former Papariga metal industry, which now houses the Department of Architectural Engineering.

• Participated in the study of the University Library in the preserved building of the former Bank of Athens, and in the study of the preserved "Megaro Tsikrikis" of the University of Thessaly.

• Participated in the study of conversion of the former Matsangos tobacco industry building into a University building.

• Participated in the preliminary studies for the new University buildings of the former Cotton Industry in Volos and Lamia (as a member of the study team that includes faculty members, undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral candidates, under the former Rector of the University Professor G. Petrakos. of faculty members is unpaid).

• Appointed as supervisor of the project of conversion of the Tsikrikis Preserved Building in Volos for the installation of the Chinese Confucius Institute. Scientific responsible: o Professor George Petrakos (former Rector)

• Participation in the Jury of EIA (Hellenic Institute of Architecture), for the 10th Biennial of Young Architects

• Hotel type of furnished apartments owned by Karaoulani in Tsagarada, Pelion.

• Expansion of a hotel with furnished apartments of 80 beds owned by Triantafyllos in Horefto, Pelion

• New five-storey apartment building (residential building) owned by Papadopoulou Evangelia in Volos

• New two-storey house owned by Karablos Vagiou in Agria Pelion

• New two-storey house with basement owned by Daskalopoulos in Volos

• New building of supporting uses (antiquities preservation laboratories, shop, multipurpose and waiting room for visitors, guard room, ticket office, researchers' offices, library and storage areas), of the Athanasaki Museum of Volos.

• Functional, aesthetic and energy upgrade of the City Hall of the Municipality of Istiaia - Edipsos and creation of a new Municipal Amphitheater - a multipurpose hall for 200 people.

• Final study for the restoration and conversion of the preserved warehouses of OLB (Volos Port Organization), into a multi-purpose building (cultural, social, etc.), and at the same time creation of a space of memory of the historical route of OLB

• Restoration of an existing stone two-storey building (1948), owned by Papageorgiou in Volos and conversion into a 4-apartment building

- Consultant of a big project team of experts/engineers, responsible for the design and implementation of the projects (from the initial concept stage to the formation of the final application and implementation study).

Selected projects realized after the decision of the City Council:

Regeneration and reunification of the open sites of several local churches of Volos.
Upgrading the city's entrance area: Stadium of Magnesiakos. Regeneration of the area (removal of advertising, lighting installation, planting) and creation of a public sports centre.
Rehabilitation of the facilities of the Gymnastics Association of Volos, in the city centre.
Functional and constructional completion of the former ‘aquarium’ building and its context at Anavrou square.
Reuse of various industrial complexes in the city of Volos. In the period 1992 - 1997 the municipality of Volos saved and reused 10 industrial buildings of the city. (Tsalapatta Rooftile and Brickworks factory, Adamopoulos Cotton Works, Electric Company, Strychnokarpos Plant, French Tobacco Warehouse, Spirer tobacco warehouse et.al)
The innovative project was funded mainly by theEU Program URBAN.

Research interests

His research interests focus on the field of construction technology, new technologies for the construction of tall buildings, as well as the bioclimatic approach to design with the aim of reducing energy consumption during the construction and operation of buildings.

At the same time, it deals with the issues of integration of abandoned industrial buildings and complexes in the urban fabric of cities in order to upgrade degraded areas and their re-participation in the functions of the city. Apart from Greece and Cyprus, the research has been extended to many countries and cities abroad, such as: Spain, Italy, England, Germany, Austria, Turkey, the Netherlands, Belgium, etc. with significant industrial tradition.

Recently during his educational leave (Oct.-Nov. 2016) he visited the region of Catalonia in Spain and in collaboration with the network M. Naptec visited most of the cities where there are thematic museums, exchanging views on the operation of organization and problems of the most organized network of industrial museums in the world. The tour was led by the former president of the international TICHIE, Professor Eusebi Casanelles (former director of the National Museum of Catalonia in Terrace and current vice-president of the Network.
