The given researching project is based on the industrial heritage of Hermoupolis (Syros).

Syros, the Greek island situated in the centre of Cyclades, has known a huge industrial revolution.  Its’ industrial remnants number tens of factories with extraordinary architecture. This project aim to point out these architectural and historical treasures.

First of all, there is a brief historical reference to the island’s history till today. Also there is an analysis of the whole sphere and the causes which influenced the creation and the rapid growth of trading, shipping, boat- building and industry. Original classification maps of the factory show the factories’ situation in the town planning.

The second part contains the main body of the project. There is an overall record of 44 factories, which includes  measure- buildings, drawings, images, icons, historical elements and architectural and constructional analysis of each factory in Hermoupolis.

Last but not least, conclusions of the whole researching project as well as critical thoughts, aim to emphasize the importance of these buildings and artifacts of industry and their meaning to the island’s history. Restoration and renovation measures must be taken, in order to preserve this legacy for the future generations.
