LEARNING OUTCOMES

A new approach of theoretical-practical research is produced, when we regard the human body as the main source of creating and living the space. This posture proposes a new depiction of historical quests and literature references. Through imaginative tools of new reality technologies, the realization of the possibilities that the embodied narration (humans and living organisms) may have in the spatial experience, emerges through original, extreme or marginal living conditions within spatial structures. The aim of the course is to experiment on urban and non-urban environmental design scenarios, based on the creation of new hybrid systems that reveal latent properties of tangible experience, while identifying modern structures through the combination of technology and tangible identity, as means of an extended sustainability condition.

The buildings, the environment, the contemporary technologies and the bodies are perceived as systems that interact and potentially have the opportunity to form new compounded ecosystems in the city, intending to respond to unfavorable or extreme housing conditions. Deconstructing, rather than reinforcing the nature-edification dipole, it is enhanced the familiarity with the concept of balance and resilience in the modern landscape.

SUBJECT

The course is based on a hypothesis: the body is a factor of understanding and shaping the space itself. Its goal is to reconsider the idea of ​​a Cartesian space, replacing it with a more physical, dynamic and vibrant perception of the space. The body is understood through Spinoza's view: "everything is a body, and the body is not defined by its material, but through its relations", and as the interactions between bodies are the contemporary theoretical focus, their topological relationship and not their ontological composition are regarded as the important notions. The architectural spatial composition is examined through the human scale through the dimension of the bodies - and by extension the relations of these bodies with technology, nature and the city are exanimated.

The method is developed in this context of theoretical-practical learning, and the architectural design of the space is regarded through the living bodies, beyond a purely anthropogenic environment. The environmental problems and support systems of a sustainable management are understood through the description of the posthuman city as a hybrid system that seeks sustainability and resilience. Graphic language is another mean of exploring alternative realities, as well as understanding the world, intending to form and inhabit new maps of the senses, exploring the possibilities beyond the visual-central culture.

Structure
The concepts of elongation, adaptation typologies and architectural survival will be explored, through designing the new structures (bridges, paths, platforms or floating structures) that connect and transform the existing urban landscape. The building or planning program will emerge through each habitation scenario and the environmental elements corresponding to each case.

Priority will be given to issues related to bioclimatic design, landscape features, the use of renewable energy sources, lighting and ventilation, but also the use of technologies and automated systems through representations of tangible conditions, dynamics and changing intensities in two-dimensional space. Multiple scales of bodies and times applied to the environmental needs of spaces is corresponding to modern theories of humanism and posthumanism.

ASSESSMENT

The course is articulated in small exercises throughout the semester, where the whole project is decomposed into stages in order to properly address the architectural issues (such as scale exercises, simulation exercises, visualization, virtual reality experiences, etc.).

Students will work in small groups. The evaluation will result from the exercises and in final project of a fully formulated and documented design proposal for the city of Volos.
