ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN III-V Η: Resilient Atmospheres for Public Spaces
ΑΣ1409, ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN,
Design Studio Required Elective at semester(s) 5, 7, ECTS:

LEARNING OUTCOMES

The aim of the course is to create environmental conditions that protect the resilience of public space in times of crisis.
Resilience, as discussed in the context of sustainable development, is not only related to endurance but to the ability to recover from adverse developments, to adap to new demands responding to rapid social, economic and climate change. The approach of the course focuses on the concept of atmosphere (ambiance) as a tool for analysis and design of public space, as traditionally associated with the phenomenology of perception and also with recent behavioral and praxeological perspectives.

Upon successful completion of the course students:
- Understand state of the art theories in reference to the concept of atmosphere in urban space.
- Become familiar with field research methods in the public space.
- Construct conceptual models of public space.
- Practice architectural design by exploring the small scale of urban equipment and the scale of urban public space.

SUBJECT

Starting point of the design research is the crisis of covid-19 pandemic and the changes it brought to public and private realms. A fact-based discussion seeks to create scenarios of interventions in public spaces that combine a detailed description of a collective event, the representation of its specific  atmosphere and the conditions of the urban environment that support it leading to the invention of a series of actions and small-scale constructions.
