Obligatory, Semester 1, ECTS: 12

SUBJECT

Thecourse, using the city of Volos as an exemplary research space, focuses on exploring observation modes, that is the way we understand, explain, familiarize ourselves with and elaborate on sites, environments, facts and objects. The practice of “image observation” reconstruction - by selecting and activating data and associations- is considered both a premise and a founding act of design.

Space is approached as a site of experience. Using the most useful item a randomly selected citizen of Volos owns, as the centre, the student charts the city as a net of spaces which are entwined around it and its usage, going through all scales. Afterwards, information is collected about the object, its materiality, its construction, its history and the relation between its usage and space and man, relevant texts, films or music are analysed and finally comes the construction, in 1:1 scale, of an “additional” object-element-position which supplements, differentiates or ameliorates it.

Media: Parallel to the gradual familiarization with digital design methods, among the priorities of the course is handmade processing and reproduction in various ways, as well as the introduction to three-dimensional construction.
