THEORY AND DESIGN I: Stories of Materials and Objects
ΑΣ1315, ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN, SKILLS DEVELOPMENT
Elective at semester(s) 6, 8, ECTS: 3
Cognitive Fields (2005/36/EU): Architectural Design.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

Analysis, Synthesis

The course focuses on design as a productive process that help us to formulate the land, materials (raw and processed), crafts, techniques and culturally defined uses. Architectural forms and objects are both artefacts that can inform us about complex and fascinating social processes; they are outcomes of different types of knowledge that defines the transformation of materials; they are outcomes of social exchange in space, of reproduction and transformation of human practices in the ‘longue durée’.

SUBJECT

In the present course, design meets research and theory. Students are assigned to design a space and to materialize an object parallel to doing field research and reading relevant texts on the typology of the studied spaces and objects, on materials and techniques of material production. Students are asked as well to narrate the stories and histories of the past, present and potential future in the making of the objects and spaces they study.
