Inmoderncities, deindustrialization creates extended areas of abandoned urban land and as a result, the need to redefine them and re-introduce them into the city dynamics. The urban reserve on the western boundaries of the centre of Thessaloniki adjacent to port, industrial and railway installations is a research field for programming and designing the expansion of the metropolitan centre.

 In a 21.000 sq.m building site, on the western edge of the centre of Thessaloniki, the students are asked to design central uses based around social housing. Thepressureforhousingmadebythe great number of immigrantsisdiscussedtogetherwiththe pursuit for a circulation model of the centre and metropolitan uses on the boundaries of the urban region.

 Designs, models and three-dimensional photorealistic representations of the project from the urban scale to the study of the typology of urban housing in densely- built, high-rise areas.

 4th -year students are asked to familiarize themselves with issues concerning the transformation of modern (Greek) metropolitan compounds. The approach is analytic and at the same time synthetic. Special emphasis is put on 2 fields of modern research: on the one hand, the research for alternative mass urban housing models towards the prevailing model of granting land and building blocks and on the other hand, the research for new practices in the use of urban land such as urban cultivations and urban gardening.
