MODERN METHODOLOGICAL TOOLS: FOLDING ARCHITECTURE
ΘΚ0605, THEORY AND CRITICISM,
Elective at semester(s) 5, 7, 9, ECTS: 3

LEARNING OUTCOMES

The course offers the students an overview of a wide range of architectural projects which are considered  ground-breaking, in conjunction with the field of practice that constantly evolves, rendering the concepts, methods and circumstances under which the projects are executed understandable, as they emerge from computer-controlled or conventional construction technology.

Together with this overview of the current architectural production, we aim at the incorporation of methodological tools through practical exercises.

SUBJECT

The course explores the convergence of theoretic issues with the application of digital software to architectural design as can be determined when reviewing production during the last 15 years. A tank of concepts, methods and techniques concerning “folding architecture” is put together.  Research focuses mainly on morphogenetic procedures with emphasis on the role of surface and its transformations (fold – formulation – subdivision – distortion – texture – environmental decoration). It also focuses on the analysis of organizational structures which negotiate the relationship between unit and total through accumulation, repetition and transformation arguments.
