This course introduces the theory of atmospheres as it has developed in Europe over the past twenty years within the field of architecture. It is grounded in a phenomenological approach to perception and uses sound as a mode of analysis and understanding of the built and lived environment.
Concepts such as the sound object (Pierre Schaeffer), sound effects (CRESSON) and soundscape (R. M. Schafer) are discussed as tools for architectural analysis, interpretation and design, enabling a critical articulation between acoustic experience and spatial composition.
Each academic year, students carry out a first study based on field recordings, listening analyses and sound editing, aimed at describing and qualitatively assessing existing sonic situations. This material then forms the basis of a second study, dedicated to the design of a sonic architecture project, exploring the relationships between space, perception and use.
The course is organised as a research and exploration studio, combining theoretical readings, sound material manipulation and experimentation with sound, with the aim of creating relational architectural situations.
