Students deal with a complex project which combines research on the program, integration to the rest of the city issues, issues of structure and construction and planning regulations. Students have to combine all the knowledge they have aquired during the previous years so that they will be able to design an innovative project within the constrains of realization.
The design studio focuses programmatically on the complex relation between living and working. Working in the contemporary world overrides the traditional boundaries between working spaces, recreation spaces and housing. Tele- working blurs the distinction between public and private spheres, between professional and familial relationships. It cancels the traditional 9 to 5 working time slot.
The current economic crisis reveals the necessity for innovative ideas and working methods. It questions what was though as necessary so far and asks for new areas of expertise and new kind of production and consumption networks.
The design process addresses a 22.000 sq.m. area in Pireos str. Students are expected to propose an innovative working – living program and the spatial complex where these functions will be accommodated and developed. Students have to deal with issues such as the incorporation of open spaces into the built mass, the integration of the complex to the rest of the city, the articulation of horizontal and vertical movements, and the composition of a planning and building codification for each type of intervention.
Studens work in groups. Their assesment is based on the mid-term presentations and on the final presentation at the end of the semester.
