LEARNING OUTCOMES

Comprehension, Application, Analysis, Synthesis

The studio explores the potential of architecture to interpret new social experiments emerging in Greek crisis.

SUBJECT

In front of the collapsing Welfare State a series of collective initiatives came into being offering social safety-nets but also shaping new political practices for the consumption and exchange of goods.

These versions of solidarity economy are served so far by informal spatial infrastructures. The possibility of an architecture designed to accommodate their operation encounters significant architectural challenges:

  • What kind of spatial arrangement and urban presence can internalize the social meanings and embrace political transformations related to these undertakings?
  • How architecture can celebrate the concept of solidarity and shelter human hardship at the same time?
  • How a design strategy can challenge dominant cultural modalities and avant-garde preoccupations and get tuned with the fundamental terms of human coexistence?

ASSESSMENT

An architectural complex that houses selected social initiatives and community activities will be located at Volos port area. The adaptation to the urban setting, the functional efficiency of the facilities and their material and symbolic constitution are the fields of the design research along with a thoughtful consideration of the social aspects of the program.
