ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN ΙV-VI Α: St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church in Manhattan, New York
ΑΣ1508, ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN,
Design Studio Required Elective at semester(s) 6, 8, ECTS: 12

The aim of this course is to propose a design for the new Church of St. Nicholas in Liberty Park, in "ground zero" in New York City.

On September 11, 2001, Saint Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church was crushed under the falling Twin Towers. The new church is going to replace the original destroyed one.

The site is an elevated park, defined by the Liberty, Cedar, West, and Greenwich streets, slightly larger than an acre and 8 meters above Liberty Street’s level. The park would serve as a gathering place for many citizens, visitors and would provide a scenic panoramic view to the Memorial.

The new Orthodox church of St. Nicholas is going to be built on the eastern site of the park. The design must be in accordance with the traditions and rituals of the Orthodox Church but also to respond to the current needs of church services and visitors.
