LEARNING OUTCOMES

Comprehension, Application, Analysis, Synthesis, Evaluation

Challenging the prevailing typological practices, the course discusses structural design issues from a topological perspective.

In a teaching framework, the course consists of a series of exercises/ subsequent readings aiming to extract the concrete or abstract properties of the event and translate them to qualities of the spatial composition or/ and principles of the structural arrangement. In a research context, the work attempts to approach the structural concept as a design resource and investigate the physical model as a tool for diagrammatic reasoning.

SUBJECT

The course objective is to explore the structural concept of a ‘lightweight’ structure that will host a performance event.

The study is held by means of diagrams and physical models, in order to study matters of structure in a literal way, as well as in a conceptual level. The study is systematically recorded in the form of a digital diary’ (blog) in order to demonstrate alternatives and justify final choices.

ASSESSMENT

A series of proposed assignments focus on the study of structural matters. Regular submissions are held every 1-3 weeks to facilitate the decision making process and alleviate the workload at the end of the semester. Class meetings alternate between lectures on theoretical issues and presentation on the progress of personal assignments. In a practical component, students are asked to participate on hands-on workshops to preview the expected output of their work in sketch models.

Students that intend to follow the course need to send an email to the instructor [ Maria Vrontissi | mvrontis@arch.uth.gr ] by Wednesday, October 20th, 2021, in order to receive an invitation for registration to the course blog. The first class will take place on Friday, October 15th, 2021 wiith the introduction to the course. The first assignment is due on Friday, October 22nd, 2021.
