Knowledge, Comprehension, Application, Analysis, Synthesis, Evaluation

This course provides an overview of construction physics with an emphasis on materials and their environmental properties. The principles of building physics as well as the main families of building materials will be presented. The course will also focus on the sensible dimensions of these materials and their ability to create remarkable architectural atmospheres: The course is divided into 3 main sections

• A. Physics of constructions: Forces, Moments, Simple mechanisms

• B. Physics of materials: Material families (Stones, Wood, Steel, Glass, Reinforced Concrete, Plastics, Fabrics)

• C. Natural Phenomena / Atmospheres (Sound / Light / Air): Acoustics: Sound Properties, Thermal Comfort, Air Motion - Natural Ventilation, Climate & Habitat: Solar Geometry, Solar Radiation, Climatic Conditions, Environmental Design Principles, Biological Analysis

The course alternates theoretical courses and practical exercises:

- that is, it alternates the presentation of the natural concepts that are necessary for the understanding of the sensitive phenomena of architecture (sound, heat, light, wind)

- with a series of lectures on the physics of buildings supplemented by the presentation of remarkable buildings

- The 3 basic units are also studied through the design and construction of small "fantastic" structures which, obviously, use these concepts but reproduce them to favor the creation of "new" architectural forms and volumes.
