Arch.Uth Postgraduate Course Postgraduate Course Postgraduate Course Postgraduate Course Arch.Uth Ελληνικά
Obligatory, Semester 8, ECTS: 4

The course explores the relation of culture(s) to cities and urban everyday life. It wishes to illustrate the influence of cultures and cultural forms upon the city but also the influence cities have on transforming and/or developing cultural forms and expressions. The course focuses on the different theories and points of view that contribute to the understanding of city life and urban cultures. Thus, it explores diverse approaches to analysing and critiquing city life and urban cultures, while discussing questions such as:

How can we (and do we) analyse and understand urban life?

How does the city – and its everyday life – relate to social, political and cultural affairs?

How are perceptions, opinions and points of view shaped or constructed?

How are identities shaped and transformed and to what extend do they influence urban cultures?

How are the city and urban life represented through the arts and/or the media and how do these representations affect perceptions or even choices?

By raising and discussing these and other questions the course aims to illustrate the complexity of urban issues and experiences as well as the interdependence of issues in the transformations of cities and urban life. Moreover, it wishes to combine theoretical explorations and discussions of cities and cultures with a more experiential understanding of both.
