MATERIALIZATIONS: Studies in architectural materiality
Elective at semester(s) 6, 8, ECTS: 3
Cognitive Fields (2005/36/EU): History and Theories, Building Technology.
Generic Competences: Ability to search for, process and analyse information from a variety of sources using the necessary technologies, Ability to work autonomously, Capacity to generate new ideas (creativity), Ability to be critical and self-critical.

This theoretical course addresses the profound role of materiality in invigorating architecture. We’ll trace diverse approaches that elevate materials and their articulations into crucial agents of architectural imagination. Through the works of Alvar Aalto, Louis Kahn, Sigurd Lewerentz, Luigi Moretti, Carlo Scarpa, Enric Miralles, Herzog &de Meuron, P. Zumthor, et al, we’ll examine the dynamics of material processing in the production of architectural meanings and expressive transgressions.

In addition, aspects of material poetics will be approached through the study of informal and vernacular architecture. Certain examples will be investigated for their raw materiality, their unexpected tensions and their potential to undermine the codes of architectural conformism.

The course consists of a series of lectures and discussions. A small research assignment calls for critical analysis of existing buildings, their material constitution and cultural implications.

Knowledge, Comprehension, Evaluation

The course seeks to familiarize with the basic building materials, their creative applications and their multiple implications. Students will be exposed in the examination of numerous cases of architectural achievements in order to comprehent the crucial impact of texture and materiality. In addition, students will learn to penetrate the surface of the architectural form and track the innner life of materials, their evocative potential ant their links with primordial elements and forces.
