Elective at semester(s) 5, 7, 9, ECTS: 3
Analysis, Synthesis, Evaluation
This course presents the basic physics and a perceptive basis needed in order to understand sound propagation in outdoor spaces. It presents the sound properties of propagation, it gives tools and methodologies to evaluate outdoor noises and it aims at showing which urban forms can be used as a tool in urban and architectural design. More specifically, notions like sound pression level, hertz, octave, decibel A, free field propagation, facade insulation of a building will be explained. This course also presents more qualitative concepts like the Sound Identities of an area, Soundscape – Sonic Effect – Sound Object that can be considered as tools which can help architects to design new buildings.
The students evaluation is realised throught a small project that the student will present at the end of the semester. The objective of the project is to design an ephemerical pavillion to show the sound qualities of the city of Volos.
