This diploma project tries to cover the extra requirements of a big scale cemetery in the centre of Athens. The project is designed in a site, by the existing cemetery, on Ilioupoleos Av., where now lies a small local park.  The site is selected due to its proximity to the Central Cemetery.

All supportive facilities, the temple, the stores and the cemetery, are placed according to a ceremonial axis, which is defined by a super staircase and a pavilion.  By the inclination tries to be separated of its surroundings. This concept is also supported by the height variation of the different functions, which hides and reveals, on the same time, moments of the ceremony to the city.

The stores accommodate functions related to the burial ceremony, which now are located around the Central Cemetery. The churchin the central part of the composition, functions as a transitional element between the market to the cemetery and back, as well as  a parochial temple. At the end of the ceremonial axis lies a pavilion of fountains. All the other space is used as an expansion ofthe burial area.

According to Yona Friedman, architecture in the future will have as its only purpose the satisfaction of the public's need for entertainment. Housing in the future will have become an empty structure, which will be filled in with the demands of the crowds, becoming a means of fulfilling these wishes and creating new sensations. Amusement will be multiplied every time a new limit is being outnumbered and a new, different kind of space is being born. The limits that the nature has placed are now being transcended and a new kind of nature is now born.

This is why, the Corinth Canal is being chosen. The canal is indeed a scenery in transition, where natural habitat and human intervention have been coexisted for so many years so that nowadays nobody can separate the natural and the technical elements of the landscape. It is considered as one of the most complicated places from the geological aspect as changes of the land are obvious to both the vertical and the horizontal axis.

After the establishment of the new national highway the verticality of the landscape is not easily conceived by the passerby and it does not seem to be a trademark of the area. In the following proposal  the structure that is presented is seeking a way to heighten the sense of verticality of the total landscape. The complex tends to put the visitor in a situation, in which he is between earth and water, floating over the gap. With a sequence of hanging walls the proposal seeks to simulate the conditions of the surrounding environment, while the scenery is being now perceived through continuous screens. Spa facilities and accommodation rooms for about 100 people are being found in the structure. Inside the complex, isolation rooms are being found in order to reestablish the individual's external stimulation by altering the sense of gravity.

The present diploma project negotiates the creation of a youth-hostel in the area of the custom office in Volos, where there is already interest in its reconstruction. The city of Volos is a major tourist attraction and particularly the port is the focal point of the commercial and tourist activity.

At the core of this research was the connection between sea and land, old and new, resident and visitor. The fleeting presence of the boat and its carried activities, become the main idea for the renegotiation of a tourist facility and the entire complex which is located in the limits of the city and the sea, with the essence of the harbor.

With respect to the existing situation, the preservable warehouses are reused for communal uses such as cultural venues, restaurant and entertainment facilities.

At the complex is proposed a new structure to accommodate the reception of the visitors, and simultaneously represents the principle for the spread of the floating system that bears the hospice units. As a unit is chosen the container to preserve the style of the harbor through their materiality and stacking.

Another feature of the proposal is the unrestricted accessibility by creating an open space. the design principles include the environmentalist planning, towards energy saving and thermal comfort.

The intention is to form a dynamic urban fabric, in which the residents through the stay and the general participation, have the opportunity to live in the land of the memory and to generate new activities.
