MATERIALIZATIONS: Studies in architectural materiality
ΘΚ0703, THEORY AND CRITICISM,
Elective at semester(s) 6, 8, ECTS: 3

This theoretical course addresses the profound role of materiality in invigorating architecture. We’ll trace diverse approaches that elevate materials and their articulations into crucial agents of architectural imagination. Through the works of Alvar Aalto, Sigurd Lewerentz, Luigi Moretti, Carlo Scarpa, Enric Miralles, Herzog &de Meuron, P. Zumthor, et al, we’ll examine the dynamics of material processing in the production of architectural meanings and expressive transgressions.

In addition, aspects of material poetics will be approached through the study of informal and vernacular architecture. Certain examples will be investigated for their raw materiality, their unexpected tensions and their potential to undermine the codes of architectural conformism.

The course consists of a series of lectures and discussions. A small research assignment calls for critical reading of existing small-scale structures, their material constitution and cultural implications.
