This paper focuses upon the relation between child and space. Its aim was to study the cognitive level of small children in reference to domestic space and gender roles in it. The sample included children of the ages 4 to 6, that is, children in their preschool, kindergarten, and early elementary school years of a school in the city of Trikala (Thessaly). The process of data collection took the form of a game: the children of the sample were asked to match human figures (e.g. father, mother, grand-father, grand-mother, and two children, a boy and a girl) with various domestic spaces (e.g., kitchen, living-room, courtyard, chicken-house, etc.) drawn on a board. The results yielded the stereotypical roles of the sexes, as well as a number of transgressed cases. The responses differed depending on the age and the sex of the children. The research cases were filmed and montaged in the form of a video-tape including also an analytical presentation of the deductions.
