This is a study in the signage of public toilettes in reference to the two sexes. Its aim was to make explicit the various stereotypes associated with sex distinctions as these have been codified in the simple language of the icon-sign. The related research took place in the city of Volos. It recorded a series of examples in cafes, taverns, restaurants, schools, public offices, and movie-theatres. Through the study it became evident that the related sign design is based on elements of embellishment, clothing, habits, body-type, and body-posture. Some of these icon-signs draw on similar signage of past eras thus alluding to parochial patterns of distinction of the two sexes. The selection of the icon-signs by the designer is aptly related to the public they address. Age, life-style, and habits are some of the determinants of the designer's decisions related to toilette signage.
