In modern times, climate change has contributed to increased interest in mountainous destinations and created new opportunities for their development. This thesis examines the broader context of mountain tourism and the development of skiing in Greece. It studies tourism activities focused on sports and outdoor recreation in mountainous Corinthia, with particular emphasis on the area of Ziria, throughout the year.
Through the study of mountain, alternative, and sports tourism, as well as an examination of ski resorts in Greece, the thesis explores the potential for increasing both visitor numbers and overnight stays in the area. The research focuses on the Ziria Ski Resort. The area was selected due to its numerous advantages, including the distinctive natural, geomorphological, and cultural characteristics of Ziria, its proximity to Athens, and the researcher’s personal experiences and connection with the site. At the same time, the characteristics of the area, its climate, the existing conditions are analysed visitor numbers, and the site’s visitors are profiled. Field research led to the identification of organizational and safety deficiencies within the site, which the architectural proposal addresses.
The starting point of the proposal is the absence of an organised accommodation facility providing overnight stays in the immediate area of the ski resort. The proposal introduces a small-scale tourism facility that supports the use of the ski resort and provides accommodation, dining, and opportunities for other activities throughout the year.
