The contemporary housing crisis in Thessaloniki, reflected in rising rental prices, the shortage of available housing, and the concentration of insufficient student accommodation in the city center, highlights the need for new strategies of spatial organization.
This diploma thesis, entitled “Reclaiming the Edge: Student Housing at the Western Entrance of Thessaloniki”, explores the potential for student accommodation in the area of Sfageia and the Port, a zone characterized by a strong post-industrial identity and significant potential for urban regeneration. The selection of this area is based on a strategy of decentralising student housing, aiming to relieve pressure on the city center while creating a new hub of urban life. At the same time, the proposal seeks to reactivate underused urban areas through the principles of mixed-use development, sustainable mobility, and collective living, introducing a contemporary model of student accommodation.
The development of student housing in this area is approached not merely as a response to housing needs, but as a tool for urban intervention, capable of activating an underutilised urban landscape and contributing to the broader transformation of western Thessaloniki.
