The Depot neighborhood is an area whose residents have strongly defined political views and fight for their rights in the city, as evidenced by their frequent joint actions and discussions on issues concerning the historic area. Taking this into account, this diploma explores the potential of Depot’s urban voids to accommodate new functions based on the needs of its residents and to become spaces that “concentrate” everyday life in the neighborhood. Thus, The proposal suggests transforming vacant ground-floor shops into “containers” of new activity, achieved through modular structures and diverse functions inserted within the existing spaces. Furthermore, the previously inactive, uncovered space, known as ‘‘akaliptos” is converted into an intermediate arcade space that functions as a transition from the private spaces of the perimeter ground floors to the central plateau of communal activities. The 30 empty ground floors and 9 abandoned uncovered spaces create a new urban functional network at ground level, which is self-managed by the residents themselves and shifts the focus from the outer shell of the building block to its center.
