The research deals with the multiplicity of life on the island of Skiathos, from winter to summer and from summer to winter. Two time periods that last 6 months each. Two completely different life styles in one year which have to do with the people, the temperature, the places, the roads and above all, the island. The history of tourism from the past to the present on the island and the evolution of the concept of hospitality are analyzed.
The case of the multiplicity of functions of spaces, in architecture but also on the island, concerns either buildings and spaces or the external environment. The analysis of these spaces of their multiple function in relation to the transition from winter to summer and vice versa. Even the way the island accepts this change. A short introduction to the term variability is described and some examples of architecture outside the island that follow the flow of the change of multiplicity in the spaces are also analyzed.
My question in this research is whether the spaces, the buildings and the form of architecture found in an area that works with seasonality can be designed from the beginning with multiple interpretations, with the help of variability, so that these forms change the use of the space as the way of life of the people changes. This will result in the space not remaining unused for the rest of the year, but acquiring a second interpretation, a second life!
