The subject of the current research project pertains to the depiction, study and analysis of a socialist city in Albania, with a focus on the urban and architectural portrayal of Korca during the period 1945-1990. Firstly, a brief historical review on the development of the old town is conducted, both from the viewpoint of urban planning and of architecture, for the sake of comprehending the structure the town acquired until the 1990s. Additionally, the main categories are provided, on the basis of which the country’s socialist model of development is established. Its principal features include the central planning of the country’s politics and economy, the integration of the “New Human” notion, the urbanization and industrialization of the cities, which were combined with a particular housing policy. Public accommodation/social housing constituted the main type of housing in urban areas and shaped the built environment of the cities and the people’s living space for approximately 40 years; for that reason, the current paper attempts to detect and analyze the fundamental principles in the architectural design of social housing. The project looks back on the city of Korca and its morphological analysis during the socialist regime period. The account and description of the facilities, which were left as cultural heritage in the town of Korca by the socialist regime, is approached via on site research. Finally, a plethora of conversations with residents of Korca highlights queries, opinions and stories about their life at the time and their correlation with the social housing which accommodated them. The historical analysis of the regime and the capture of its traces in the city of Korca is being conducted for the sake of comprehending the contemporary image of the city and drawing useful conclusions.
