The present research object for study is the action of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees and the implemented programs for the provision of housing for refugees and asylum seekers the time period 1955-1975 in Thessaloniki. At the end of important events in Greece, such as the Balkan wars, the A’ World War and the Greek-Turkish War a large amount of people had the urgent need for shelter, but until then the Greek state didn’t help efficiently. Circa 1955 the work of United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees starts, while cooperating with the Greek state, organizing the shelter programs in Greece for the asylum seekers, as well as financing for the construction of, at least, 24 buildings in Thessaloniki (and the rest of Greece). Continuing, there are reported some operators that were created by the Greek state to solve the problem with the refugees shelters. Also, there are several private organizations reported with which the Greek state cooperated. Closing, the work of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees is observed and compared to similar projects of refugee sheltering, buildings of Alexandra’s avenue for refugees, and synoptically is mentioned the work of UNHCR in Greece of 2022.
