The industrial heritage is an integral part of the cultural heritage and consists of the remains of industrial culture which are of historical, technological, social, architectural or scientific value. The industrial civilization has left in its wake tangible and intangible cultural remains, which we ought to protect and preserve. The value of the industrial heritage was recognized after the actions of sensitized individuals and organizations.
In Greece, the industrial activities began in the 1870s. Since 1990, there has been a considerable fragmentation of the industrial manufacturing, which resulted in plant closures. The deindustrialization continued at a fast pace, resulting in industrial remains such as buildings, machinery and corporate documents, which were mostly abandoned scattered throughout the Greek land. To this day, many of these old industrial buildings and complexes are scattered into the urban landscape of Greek cities. It is a phenomenon that you can ascertain, by just having a look around. However, it is well known that everything in life changes and nothing remains as it was before. Thus, the old and abandoned industrial buildings have the ability to be transformed and provide for the needs of modern cities.
This research paper is an attempt for industrial heritage analysis, as integral part of the cultural heritage. Also, it attempts to investigate how and to what extent the value and the greatest need of reuse an existing industrial building is perceived by Greeks. The case of Karditsa and the abandoned complex of the former Power Plant in the town center, is the main research topic. In the context of this research paper, a sample survey was conducted exclusively for citizens of Karditsa. Interviews and the use of a questionnaire, are the two chosen data collection methods.
