Architecture consists of the stimuli that someone receives from space. It is a spatial experience that is described from the senses. Sight, hearing and touch allow humans to identify the architectural elements of space. Often, architects design based on visual satisfaction and practical, ergonomic functionality of space.
What happens though when sound becomes the norm of design? The following research presents what we consider sound, what are the characteristics of sound, the bilateral relationship with architecture and how it affected the design of space. Through examples the reader can understand the role of sound as a composition tool. Sometimes, it is an element of inspiration and other times a problem to be solved. The importance of sound, both internally as well as externally, has been a design question for architects, from ancient times to the present day.
