At the last 190 years, between 1828 and 2018, Aegina island, was at the center and at the same time uncentered of the cotemporary Greek state. Saronic golf’s waters, protected Aegina from Independence War, drought precious sponges from the African and Italian coasts at the shift of the previous century and stopped Athens sprawl through the West after the Second World War. The common reality of the mainland never arrives at the middle of Saronic golf, transforming the island, from capital, to a growing city and from popular resort to an Athenian suburb. The different roles of Aegina among these 190 years, were fulfilled by respectively aesthetical and functional architectural solutions shaping the various residential environment of the island.
This research is not a catalogue of the newest and contemporary architecture in Aegina as a whole, but focuses firstly at the high-profile designing and secondly at the local remakes of the international styles.
