The reality of today wishes us, as a society, to experience a fast and even uncontrolled course towards development And the subjects of it, that is us, are ready to strive to follow it and adopted it in many levels of our society
This speed in combination with the will to accept the new and be characterized as modern, urges us to reject elements of our societies, making the simple outdated and irrelevant for our times. Without, however, examining in depth if we can continue to benefit from these old practices .Sennet in one of his books claims that «the development of talents of a person are based on following the rules founded by the older generations»
An example of many is that of animal farming, specifically goats and sheep. A socioeconomic model that has survived for centuries and has been the reason for wealth of ethnographic and cultural elements to be produced, is today in danger of disappearing.
Nevertheless, all over Greece and mainly the rural areas still survive, through persistence and willingness, small animal farming families that preserve their heritage and the oral knowledge of nature of their place.
They manage to survive self-sufficiently and produce what they can take from nature with care, preserving structures such as those of their sheep pens, their cottages. Here the small trunks and the aquatic plants have been replaced by metal sheets, wood and metal beams, remnants of other constructions, considered by many as rubbish. Ignoring all the «developed» massive forms of animal farming these modern shepherds continue to graze their flock in the same mountain slopes until they will not be able to do so anymore.
