The end of Cold War meant the beginning of global cooperation and disarmament which led in his turn to a massive abandonment of military bases, especially in Europe and North America. However, regarding to Greece and the Balkan States which were cut off the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR) and her troops, there were other reasons that resulted to the removal of the military camps from the urban tissue (defense modernization, urban sprawl). Nowadays, there is a great number of non-active military camps spread in Greek cities. They are valuable unexploited areas which are non-built-up for the most part. As a result, they offer a great opportunity for the renewal of the urban tissue which lacks of green spaces and other community land uses. These camps are some of the few empty areas left, so it’s a real challenge to deal with them right. The intention/target of this research is through the study of the way that several nations and Greece among them dealt with these areas until today, institutionally and practically through examples, to gain an experience which could lead into more complete proposals in the future, in order to make the best of these public land reserves for the upgrade of the Greek urban tissue.
