On Tuesday November 5th at 21:00 in Amphitheatre, prof. Athanassios (Thanos) Economou will give a lecture entitled: "Shape Machine: A new modeling paradigm in CAD".
Text-to-image, image-to-image, and more recently, text-to-vector Machine Learning (ML) models have been increasingly pervading contemporary architectural practice and pedagogy. And yet, Find and Replace operations, fundamental for any ML model —and essential in Word, Excel, or Photoshop for that matter— have yet to be implemented in Computer-Aided Design (CAD). How would ever be possible to have a generous implementation of symbolic (classical) or neural (non-classical) computational models in design when the most fundamental operations of all —vector-based Find and Replace shape operations— have not been properly implemented in CAD? The talk discusses the current state of Shape Machine, a shape-rewrite computational system that features vector-based shape find and rewrite operations and a logical processing framework to literally allow drawing programming code for searching and editing CAD models by drawing shapes. The software is developed at the Shape Computation Lab at the Georgia Institute of Technology, and is currently integrated within Rhinoceros, a NURBS 2D/3D CAD software. Several applications drawn from architectural design, digital fabrication, modeling infectious diseases, knot theory, and other fields showcase the potential impact of this new technology in various domains.
Athanassios (Thanos) Economou is a Professor at the School of Architecture in the College of Design and an Adjunct Professor at the School of Interactive Computing at the Georgia Institute of Technology. Dr. Economou's teaching and research are in shape grammars, computational design, computer-aided design, and design theory, with over sixty published papers in these areas. He is the Director of the Shape Computation Lab, a research group that explores how the visual (and unruly) nature of shape can be formally implemented with new technologies to enable new paradigms in CAD, design automation, visual scripting, and creative design. Recent projects include the Shape Machine, a new computational technology that allows shape embedding in CAD systems Dr. Economou holds a Diploma in Architecture from NTUA, Athens, Greece, an M.Arch from USC, and a PhD in Architecture from UCLA.

Mario RINKE
Mario is a Professor at the Faculty of Design Sciences at the University of Antwerp. Trained as a structural engineer and working in architecture for some years, he researches and teaches structures and construction in architecture. Mario holds a Diploma in civil engineering from the Bauhaus University Weimar and a PhD from ETH Zurich and worked as a design engineer for major offices in London and Zurich. He taught at the architecture department at ETH Zurich, the Lucerne University of Applied Sciences, and the Tor Vergata University Rome. In design and build workshops, he explored material-based design and craftsmanship. He co-founded the International Association of Structures and Architecture (IASA).
Alessandro TELLINI
Since 2014, Alessandro has been the head of the Rapid Architectural Prototyping Laboratory (Raplab) and the main lecturer for Model and Design at the Department of Architecture ETH Zurich. He runs his Zurich-based design and craft practice, Faber Atelier, with his partner Elisa Alessi. Trained as both a graphic and product designer, he developed a strong interest in pedagogy, fabrication, and construction throughout his career. He applied his practical knowledge in various settings, including architectural modelmaking, product development, the fabrication of large-scale architectural prototypes, and in international workshops and conferences. Teaching, researching, and investigating projects at the intersection of craft knowledge and design thinking are always at the core of his activities.

During the course "ARCHITECTURAL STUDIO III-Va" 2024-25 a series of discussions on the lived dimension of the Krafsidonas torrent is planned.
It starts on 16/10 at 20:00 with the presentation "Cohabiting with Krafsidonas" by Evaggelia Apostolou, graduate of ARCH.UTH, student MSc "Studies in Mobility" Department of History, Archaeology and Social Anthropology UTH, inhabitant of the torrent's riparian zone.
The Architecture Design Studio VII "What If," led by tutors Efthymia Dimitrakopoulou, Zisis Kotionis, Giorgos Mitroulias, and Sofia Vyzoviti, is featured in the architectural exhibition "Human Settlements / Sustainable Communities" at the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center's Mediterranean Garden in Athens. Five studio projects were selected through an open call and evaluation process by a committee. Our department is also represented by two diploma theses.
According to the curators, the selection focuses on innovative proposals that reflect creative thinking and address the theme with depth, dynamism, and originality.
