The interest for open spaces in urban environment is growing, since it has been realized that they contribute to the quality of life in cities and therefore, the life of their inhabitants. But unfortunately, due to a lack of economic forces or coordination between private and public sectors, most of the open spaces remain empty or downgraded. In addition, because of environmental problems the comfort level is not met in many of these sites.
The principle purpose of this study, is the analysis of microclimate’s influence in the use of open spaces in modern urban centers and the recognition of these problems, but at the same time, there is an interpretation of how these problems affect and to what extent, the comfort level and therefore the activities of users in this area. Next, are provided examples of urban equipment, designed especially for the improvement of microclimate at open spaces and finally, there is a design proposal of an urban equipment unit, which aims to improve the microclimate in outdoor urban space.
In particular, the study is divided into three main parts. Τhe first part analyzes the concept of microclimate, the main environmental problems in modern cities - such as the mist, the noise and the “urban heat island” effect. Furthermore, the definitions of optical, acoustic and thermal comfort are analysed, in order to determine the relationship among them. Ιn addition, there is an investigation of the contribution of the plants and in particular the “green” walls, to improve microclimate and comfort conditions, and finally, reference is made to the importance of proper management of water resources in urban areas.
The second part is a presentation of urban equipment units, complete or not, specifically for overturning of the above situation, through the improvement of microclimate and thus of comfort conditions. Examples of different scales, characteristics and types, are presented successively.
Finally, in third part, by leveraging information and knowledge, which obtained in the above sections, it’s done a proposal for a new urban equipment, the “Green Wall”. The “Green Wall”., will have a double role, to achieve comfort conditions for users of the site and the management of rain water of the area where is placed. Its objective is the improvement of microclimate in the area to be used each time. In addition, there is a manufacturing and design analysis of the “wall” and the possibilities of its development. The study ends with examples for positioning and use of “Green Wall” in two different areas and the possibilities of adapting, in them.
