In this research study the diversity of the educational space is examined, in comparison with social, political and economic considerations, due to the fact that the school building is the ideological framework of each era.The time limits of the retrospective study are resulting from significant events both in social and in architectural aspects.In each of the time periods that are examined, school buildings are depicted and teaching methods are mentioned accordingly.
In the beginning, the first buildings built for educational purposes are shown, and the development of school infrastructure over a hundred years is written down, so as to reach up to the current version of the school environment, and even more to give guidelines for the school's future.
The school building is a public, identified with the purpose of education, building. After recognizing the importance of the learning space as a factor in education, research material is remarked, so as to demonstrate the influence of the school environment in the learning process.
Furthermore, the factors according to which the new learning environment will be shaped are indicated. The two new components of the architecture of the school in the future, is the Environmental Education, which refers to increasing the awareness of environmental issues and working to resolve them, and the Digital Technology in the learning process, which changes the space of education.
Moreover, Design Principles that are thought as exemplary are depicted and examples of building techniques and existing bioclimatic buildings suitable for the purpose of education are pointed out.
The study has to do with the school building, which plays a key role in the education process, and contributes to the transmission of knowledge and socialization. A bioclimatic building which nowadays seems to have educationally the most significant experiential effect.
