The evolution of floor tiles has its origins in prehistory. The tiles have been used in different ways and decorated with various themes. The technique of their production has developed, so that today we can have many kinds of tiles, spreaded all over the world. Among these are the “cement tiles”, which have decorated and continue to decorate floors of buildings for more than a hundred years and which have offered a huge variety of designs that are similar to carpet designs.
The block of Mefsut, with its special architecture, which has remained closed and abandoned for years in the junction of Polymeri and Dr. Tzanou streets in the city of Volos, hides well inside it the secrets of the production of tiles and were of good quality, characteristics that made this factory one of the most famous factories in the Balkans.
In the following pages referring to my research, in the framework of the program of study of the Department of Architecture of the University of Thessaly, an attempt will be made to know some things about the owners of the factory and their relations to each other, the existing working conditions of that time in the factory, about the manner of productions and application of the cement tiles and the way in which the existence of the factory has contributed to social and economic development of the area.
