The subject of this research assignment is the exploration of the upper spaces of the city. In this project, I am giving a try to interpret the fifth view of the city buildings, and to present this limit as another level which can be define by this.
It’s being studied here the contour as line of function and dependence of an edge space from its centre, enclosing like that defined with limit line which encircles, encompass, unite but and separates, and which defines two important levels; the street level and the level defined from the roof tops of the city.
The upper space of the city, as like any space, it is double substance. It characterised from geometrical and human quality. Based on this theoretical shape, is investigated the matters around the “residential” of the roof tops.
The analysis is being made in models of real buildings, which recorded mostly in the city of Volos. Through this fieldwork, it was recorded the form and the use of the roofs, and their relation with the structured web of the city. They were separated in four categories of spatial “models”. The “introvert”, the “unique”, the “forbidden”, and the “conventional”. In this process of the allocation of the examples to be categorised, it was declared necessary to investigate the relation they have with the wider city. From individual examples of building structures (models), its being examined how they work in subsets, and at the end, to the structured web of the city.
The investigation at the roof level of the city generates continuously questions. Id the upper space capable to cope to the needs of the daily routine, as a reception for the standard type, form of the modern housing? The space of the roof tops of the city could have another use, other than the known exclusive use we know?
