The choice of the subject of the assignment was created by a general brainstorming on the issue of country residence in Greece. The postwar period establishes the bloom of country residence in our country and its gradual conversion into a modern lifestyle of a posterior age.
In our assignment, we attempt to investigate and redefine the outline of country residence taking into consideration the overall matrix as a means to understand the country residence wholly(first part) and more specifically through publications, articles and printed journals during the period 1957-1969, in Greece(second part). The mythologies of country residence and the contemporary consumer behavior and forms, the elevation of country residence as "high architecture" and its conversion into one of the dominant lifestyle and into familial "status symbol" of the posterior age, the representations of high architecture in architectural magazines and advertisements, the relationship between the summer residence and the natural habitat, the transformations of the structure and the psychological features of the “ideal form of residence”, constitute the issues that will be examined.
More specifically, in the first part, there is an attempt to investigate the matrix of country residence as branch of the term country habitation. The general meaning of the term country habitation creates overlapping relationships, interdependences, controversies which define and specify the frame of country residence as a phenomenon. The study of sketchy fields designs the outline of a more essential approach of the phenomenon.
In the second part, we are going to study the summer, country residence in Greece focusing on its printed representation through magazines of that age. The study, which functions as a basic tool of research focusing on the "Architecture" magazine, it will be carried out in the shape of sketchy collected projects creating an archive of postwar published projects of country residence and at the same time deepening in its representations and in the general frame of a changing era which elects new symbols. This tool will determine the interval of time of our research which is signaled by the first and the last issueof the magazine.
A deeper understanding of country habitation throughan archive of media is the final goal of that study.
