The research work is on the hayatat home in Halkidiki. The term hayat we mean the semi-outdoor space that is on the top floor of the houses. In some parts of Greece the word hayat has a different meaning. For example, in Crete, hayat is a semi outdoor area of the floor, while in Lesvos is the central hall that is closed to the floor of the houses.
The choice of this issue was because of my admiration for its traditional architecture, which is unfortunately quite undervalued and derelict in our country. Especially for the Halkidiki with virtually no comprehensive study of traditional architecture and more specifically on the hayat, which is an important architectural element. The area of Chalkidiki chosen because of my origin and my desire to know better my hometown.
The structure of the research work is as follows: initially given a reference to general characteristics of Halkidiki and in history, then presents the characteristics of the traditional place of residence, followed by more detailed presentation of the hayat, which is the subject of work. To better understand the role and importance of the hayat in Halkidiki Home presented 32 representative houses with hayat from different villages of Chalkidiki, which are then grouped into categories, depending on the location, size, etc. hayat of them, and thereby created the typological table for the traditional house with a hayat in Halkidiki. In most settlements were on location, while others learned only data from the literature. At the end of working out the role of the hayat in the Greek, Cypriot and Balkan traditional home, while comparative analysis with traditional home in Halkidiki.
