Egnatia Road is considered the most difficult road construction worldwide, not only for it’s length, but mostly due to the fact that it faced successfully, in theoretical and constructional grade, to accomplish the mapping which is going through a difficult terrain model, with geological problems (sliding, great seismicity ) and the rules of the protection of the environment had to be kept and the archeological sites should be protected too.
So along Egnatia’s Road shaft there is a great number of technical constructions, total length about 90 Km, which includes bridges, tunnels and up and down, crossing levels as well as drains.
The particular research is occupied with important bridges of Egnatia Road. All the modern constructional methods were adjusted, one of which is the cantilever method ( Balanced Cantilever Method, at the same time or not from both ends to the centre ) with the maximum length to 1.100m with the maximum length of span to 235m and height of piers 90m.
This method was used for the construction of a great number of bridges of Egnatia’s Road and it has got important advantages compared to other modern constructional methods. The purpose of this research is to investigate in detail the experience of the adjustment method to Egnatia Road and useful deductions generally for cantilever method which is always consisted of a challenge not only for the bridges but also for all the constructions.
