Modern Movement and the new materials that appear in the 20th century put on the map the horizontal roof (rooftop) as the new crown of the contemporary city. In the greek area the one that will comprise the new ‘roof’ of the city is the rooftop of the apartment building, which is almost the exclusive building type of the greek city, ‘born’ at the middle-war and spread widely after the 50’s.
The particular physiognomy that this place presents has been attempted to be researched through the record of rooftops in the area of Thessaloniki. It has been an examination of the several arrangements of the space and the morphological and architectural features of its elements. The research also includes a questionnaire that has been given to inhabitants of apartment buildings, in order that it will be examined their contact to the space of the rooftop.
The results of the research show the evolution of the space of the rooftops through time, since 50’s to now, and the particular conditions that existed when this space has been changed. There have been analyzed and compared the qualitative features of the rooftops and valuated the positive and negative parts, concluding to a general valuation of their image into the city.
Finally, with the assistance of the results of the questionnaire, there are shown the problems of access and use of the rooftop that the inhabitants have, a use that possibly would approve the image of the rooftops and city and would forward social life.
