Humankind has often become witness of the nature’s fury power. During the previous years those phenomena have been more intense. Since the beginning of time the first rate concern of man was to find or make a shelter in order to protect himself from the elements of nature.
The current project is divided into two parts. The first part consists of the theoretical survey and definitions like ‘temporary house’, ‘shelter’, ‘disaster’, ‘sheltering’ and ‘housing’ are examined, in addition to the social and economical factors from which the proper design for a complete recovery after a natural disaster must emerge. Furthermore, regarding the case ways of treatment are categorized.
In the second part, examples are presented that have been chosen by proximity in space and time. More specifically, the cases are: the earthquake of Athens in September 7 1999, the hurricane Katrina that crossed New Orleans in August 29 2005 and the tsunami of Indic Ocean that stroke Sri Lanka in December 29 2004. Also, there is a presentation of the methods that the state has adopted in order to treat each case in according to the needs of the injured people for temporary houses and the offers are estimated if they contributed to a successful recovery of the region.
