This research work deals with the energy re-design of the building where the department of mechanical engineers in Thessalia University is located. There is also a reference to the climatic data of the city of Volos and moreover an analysis on matters of energy and building design. As far as the study building (of the mechanical engineers department T.U.) is concerned, this research work studies its existing energy state and sets about three issues.
• First the issue of the lighting of the study building, where the problem of inadequate illumination of its main corridor is stated. After measuring it with a photometer it is obvious that the corridor is not well lit. Thus it is decided to install skylights on the roof of the study building. This is an easy task as the sawtooth roof pattern helps to deal with the problem of dim lighting in the best possible way.
• The second study issue is the installation of buried cooling pipes under the main corridor. The whole procedure involves the installation of two pipes along the corridor and the insertion of air inside the building, after it passes through them, 4 meters underground, where the soil temperature is smaller than the air. Along its route, the air grows cold and it is inserted cooled in the study building, which results in a decrease of the inner temperature in the summer months, and energy save from air-conditioning.
• Finally, natural ventilation methods of the building and the offices are proposed, because the change of geometry of nutshell (new roof).
