A dance duet, perfectly balanced between rhythm and expression, featuring two equally significant dancers engaged in a continuous dialogue of movements. Information Design, the foundational dancer, maintains rhythm and coherence, creating the framework where the choreography can develop harmoniously, with each step steady and precise. Architectural Representation, the dancer that brings grace and emotion into the choreography, adds depth and vitality to every movement while communicating its hidden story. Harmony emerges -not from individual dominance- but through their continuous interaction: the rhythmic dancer offers the security that allows the expressive dancer to explore the unexpected, while expressiveness inspires the former to transcend technical precision and integrate emotion into their movements. However, the dance performance gains true meaning only when perceived through the audience’s gaze—those who participate in this dialogue through visual experience. Visualization, therefore, will be the spotlight illuminating the stage, allowing the audience to witness rhythm and expression intertwine, opening the gateway to a multi-sensory experience.

Within this context, the essay explores the collaboration of these two “dancers” under the “light” of visualization. It begins with an analysis of the fundamental principles of Information Design, focusing on its functional and widely accepted aspects, which underpin the transmission of information. It then examines the strength of Architectural Representation, not only as a tool for communicating technical characteristics but also as a medium for conveying the experiential qualities of space. Emphasis is placed on the potential of breaking established design conventions and proposing unconventional methods that enrich spatial understanding and experience. Finally, the research is supported by examples of theoretical and practical analyses that highlight “illustration” as a distinct category of visualization and as a pathway for communicating intangible dimensions. They also underscore the importance of combining conventions with their transcendence, offering an expanded field that emphasizes the significance of balance and flexibility to enhance both Architectural Representation and architectural practice, thereby enriching the user’s experience.
