As the avarage temperature of the earth increases, so do the human needs for the constant use of air conditioning systems in their homes. Not only that, but the relentless construction of buildings, one on top of the other, trampling the earth, is increasingly contributing to the depletion of the planet's natural resources, resulting in destruction and global warming. In other words, we are solving on problem with another.
This research topic examines one of the solutions to this universal problem that humanity has been experiencing in the past years, earth sheltered housing or buildings that are built into the ground. The aim is to study and research their construction methods, various typologies and characteristics, economic and energy interests, their positive and negative aspects as well as the right approach to potential clients/residents.
The concept of earth sheltered housing is not something new. Primitive humans initially lived either in caves or in natural holes into the ground to protect themselves from the elements of nature and wild beasts. However, over the years, man gradually climbed on top of the pyramid, simultaneously moving away from the underground protection of the earth, using the ground as the base of his dwelling, declaring that he is the one who controls and tames the earth and nature, not the other way around.
It is time for man to return to those practices, not because he is backward, but because there can be a coexistance between man and earth. Just as the earth offered to man for thousands of years, now he should do the same.
