Moving towards building’s power independence, this research is set to explore the way of development and evolution in the green building design. A chronological throwback is presents the origins of the green building design as well as the early development around the globe. Engineers of the construction industry, noticing the rising environmental problem due to the modern way of living, create groups with the aim of environmental awareness in the construction sector. In 1990 the first energy certification system is released and attracting interest in the Western Europe, forming a path towards building’s remediation. The USA, looking up to the European construction model, develops a unique certification based on their regulations. BREEAM and LEED, being the most recognizable certification systems around the globe, are analyzed in terms of their basic principles as well as reviewing their similarities and differences. The global interest towards green building certificates leads to the creation of national construction models emphasizing on the local needs of each country. The energy consumption of the buildings is being achieved as self-sufficient with the help of the rapid evolution on renewable energy tech. Created a fully autonomous building by maximizing the use of its capabilities, the interest is evolving towards a more human-centered factor and the indoor living conditions of its users. It is then referred to the local level where the lack of environmental construction awareness is being observed. The country’s legislative framework is being reformulated and is moving in parallel with the decisions of the European Parliament. Modernizing planning mechanisms alongside the creation of local energy certification schemes based on European standards. Being one of the pioneers of the environmental design mentality in Greece Kokkinou & Kourkoulas Architects and Associates, following a personal interview with architect Andreas Kourkoulas, provides answers related to the design approach of buildings with European energy certification systems, analyzing the technical issues.
